SAT Strategies

One of the strongest habits a person can develop in pursuit of a higher SAT score and college success is reading.

A successful person will begin reading everything they can get their hands on and not just fun reading but reading that will improve them.

It doesn't matter how good a reader you are, what matters is that you read. The more you read and the longer you read the better you will get at reading. So if you want success, READ!

SAT Strategies

"Vocabulary enables us to interpret and to express. If you have a limited vocabulary, you will also have a limited vision and a limited future."--Jim Rohn

One of the first things you need to do, if you are serious about doing well on the SAT or the ACT, is improve your vocabulary.

A great way to do that is by joining a word-a-day email list. You receive a different word each day with the pronunciation, definition and how to use the new word.

Now, practice using the new word during the day for reinforcement.

SAT MYTHS

MYTH #3: Don't guess

This is not necessarily true.

If you can eliminate at least two of the answers it is in your favor to answer the question with your best guess. The only time you leave it blank is when you don't know anything about the question.

The process of elimination is a very useful technique.

Monday we will look at some SAT strategies.

SAT MYTHS

MYTH #2: The problems are all the same.

Not true. The first third of each section will be easy, the second third will be medium and the last third will hard. The reading comprehension is the only part that doesn't follow this order.
  • easy - just about everyone gets right
  • medium - only about half get right
  • hard - hardly any one gets right

The key to success here is practice, practice and more practice.

SAT MYTHS

A little known secret about the SAT is that the SAT is not a knowlegde test. It is a general apptitude test. Which means, while some tests are checking to see what you already know, the SAT is designed to test your ability to use what you already know.

In other words, it's more about your ability to learn and process new information than what you know. This is good news for those willing to work, because SAT success comes down to practice and simple strategies.

But there are many myths or misunderstandings concerning the SAT.

Myth #1: The math is complex

Fact: The math on the SAT is very basic. It will consist of arithmetic, algebra one, geometry and algebra II. There is no calculus or even trigonmetry.
